Weight distribution and sway
Load bars move hitch weight forward. They do not raise the door-sticker ratings.
A conventional trailer pushes down on the ball. Past a point, that push lifts the front axle and loads the rear. A weight-distribution hitch uses spring bars to send some of that load back to the front axle and to the trailer.
Ford’s 2026 F-150 guide says not to tow more than 5,000 pounds without a weight-distribution system. The Super Duty guide says its published towing values are the same for weight-carrying and weight-distributing hitches, and recommends restoring about 50 percent of the front axle load if you use bars.
Sway is a different problem from static tongue weight. Too little tongue weight, a tall frontal area, or a short wheelbase can start it. Bars and friction or cam devices are equipment choices. They do not replace staying inside GCWR, GAWR, and the trailer rating.
