Trailer brakes and control

The truck’s brakes are sized for the truck. The trailer has to stop its own share.

Most states require brakes on a trailer above a weight threshold, often around 3,000 pounds, and the threshold is not the same everywhere. An integrated brake controller, a 7-pin connector, and a breakaway system are part of a real tow package, not decorations.

Electric, electric-over-hydraulic, and surge brakes behave differently. The controller has to match the trailer. Gain set too high locks the trailer tires. Gain set too low makes the truck do the stopping.

This page will not invent a brake rating the manufacturer did not publish. When a guide names a controller or a wiring package as required for a cell, that requirement belongs on the configuration row.
