The weight stack

Curb weight is the truck before people and cargo. Payload is what you may still add. GVWR is the most the truck may weigh, and tongue or pin weight counts toward it. GAWR is the same idea per axle. GCWR is the most the truck and trailer may weigh together.

You can be under the trailer rating and over the rear axle, or under GVWR and over GCWR once the trailer’s axles are included. Each ceiling fails on its own.

Ford’s 2026 guides treat conventional tongue weight as about 10 percent of the loaded trailer and fifth-wheel or gooseneck pin weight as about 15 percent. That share is payload. It is not free weight sitting only on the trailer axles.
