Why the same truck's towing capacity changes every year
A 2024 F-150 and a 2026 F-150 are not the same rating. Here is what actually changes between model years, and what does not.
The nameplate is not the rating
People search for 'F-150 towing capacity' and expect one number. Ford does not publish one number. The 2026 towing guide's 13,500-pound conventional maximum is a 3.5L EcoBoost with the Tow/Haul Package and the Max Tow Axle. A Raptor R in the same model year is rated at 8,700 pounds. Both are F-150s.
Model years add another split. Engines appear and disappear. The Ram 1500 had no HEMI for 2025 and got the HEMI eTorque back for 2026. The Tundra's 5.7L V8 ended after 2021. A rating from the last V8 year is not a rating for the twin-turbo truck that replaced it.
What usually changes
A redesign changes the frame, the curb weight, the axle choices, and the cooling package. That is a new chart, even if the brochure still says F-150. A mid-cycle refresh can change the chart without a new body: a new axle ratio, a new tow package, or a diesel tune.
Inside one model year the chart is a grid. Cab, bed, two-wheel drive versus four-wheel drive, axle ratio, and package each move the maximum. Chevrolet's 2026 Silverado 1500 chart puts the same Duramax at 9,300 pounds or 13,300 pounds depending on GCWR tier, cab, and wheels.
How this site treats a year
Every model year has its own page. A towing number appears only when a source names that year. The 2025 Kelley Blue Book maximum is not copied onto 2024 or 2026. If the chart for a year is not transcribed, the page says so and points at the nearest cited year without pretending the numbers match.
That is slower than filling every cell with a plausible figure. It is also the only way a page can stay trustworthy when someone is about to buy a trailer.

- Can I use a 2026 towing guide for a 2023 truck?
- No. Use the guide for that model year, then the label on the driver's door jamb for that specific truck. Packages and axle ratios changed even when the body did not.
- Why do two sources disagree about the same year?
- They are often describing different configurations, or a marketing page and the towing guide have drifted. The 2026 PowerBoost is an example: Ford's towing guide lists 12,400 pounds and Ford's specs page has also shown 11,600. This site keeps the conflict visible.
