Payload versus towing capacity
Maximum payload and maximum towing are different trucks. Here is how to spend the payload you actually have.
Hitch type 01
Conventional
Receiver behind the truck. Check trailer rating, tongue load and weight-distribution requirements.
Hitch type 02
Fifth-wheel
Coupling plate in the bed. Check pin load, bed clearance, payload and the fifth-wheel chart.
Hitch type 03
Gooseneck
Ball in the bed. Gooseneck and fifth-wheel maxima can differ; use the matching hitch rating.
They are not simultaneous
Ford prints this in the 2026 F-150 guide: horsepower, torque, payload, and towing may not be achieved on the same truck. The available tow rating is 13,500 pounds. The available payload rating is 2,440 pounds. The max-tow EcoBoost is not the max-payload truck.
Ram's 2026 dealer summary shows the same split. The V6 is the 2,360-pound payload truck. The Hurricane standard-output is the 11,610-pound tow truck, with a lower payload.
What payload has to hold
Tongue or pin weight, every occupant including the driver, and cargo all count against door-label payload. Subtract hitch hardware and accessories added after factory labeling as well. Tow-test occupant assumptions do not give you free passenger weight. Do the math from the sticker, not from the brochure peak.
The payload calculator starts with editable planning assumptions of 12.5 percent conventional tongue weight or 20 percent in-bed pin weight. You can enter a measured hitch load instead. It counts every occupant, cargo and added hitch hardware against your own door-sticker payload, and leaves the margin unknown until you enter that limit.
Questions
- Why does a diesel sometimes tow more and carry less?
- The engine and the hitch rating can be higher while the engine, emissions equipment, and 4x4 hardware eat curb weight. Payload is GVWR minus curb weight. A heavier truck has less leftover.
