Half-ton vs 3/4-ton vs 1-ton
Which class to shop when the trailer weight is the only thing you know.
Half-ton
F-150, Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, Tundra, and the electric trucks in that size. Cited conventional maxima in this catalog run from about 10,000 pounds for a 2025 Lightning to 13,500 for a 2026 F-150. That is the right class for many boats and travel trailers, and the wrong class for a heavy fifth-wheel.
Ride, rear seat space, and parking are why people stretch a half-ton. Payload is why they get into trouble. Run the pin weight before you believe the trailer rating.
3/4-ton
F-250, Silverado 2500HD, Sierra 2500HD, Ram 2500. Cited 2025 and 2026 conventional maxima cluster around 20,000 to 22,000 pounds, with gooseneck ratings higher. This is the usual step when the trailer is a large fifth-wheel or the pin weight will not fit in a half-ton.
1-ton
F-350, F-450, Silverado 3500HD, Sierra 3500HD, Ram 3500. Dual rear wheels show up when the gooseneck rating climbs into the 30,000s. The F-450's cited 40,000-pound figure is the top of the published pickup charts in this catalog, and it is a specific gooseneck package, not a daily-driver crew cab.
Questions
- Is a midsize truck enough for a 7,000-pound trailer?
- Some are, barely, and only with the tow package. A 2026 Colorado with the Advanced Trailering Package is rated at 7,700 pounds. The same truck without that package is rated at 3,500. A Tacoma's cited 2025 maximum is 6,500, which does not cover 7,000.
